Background of the study:
Socio-cultural factors are pivotal in influencing students’ attitudes toward education, encompassing family values, community traditions, and societal expectations. In Ede South, cultural norms and social practices significantly affect how students perceive the importance of formal education (Ayodele, 2023). Positive cultural reinforcement can motivate students to excel academically, whereas rigid traditional beliefs may discourage progressive educational pursuits. Variations in socioeconomic status, gender roles, and community expectations further contribute to shaping students’ attitudes. Recent studies have highlighted that when educational initiatives align with cultural values, student motivation and performance improve markedly (Obi, 2024). However, when socio-cultural practices conflict with modern educational methods, students may exhibit ambivalence or resistance towards schooling. This study explores the intricate relationship between socio-cultural factors and students’ attitudes, aiming to understand how these influences can be harnessed to improve educational engagement and academic success in Ede South (Ayodele, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
In Ede South, socio-cultural factors have led to mixed attitudes towards education among students. While some cultural practices promote academic excellence, others create resistance to modern learning methods. This conflict has resulted in inconsistent student motivation and academic performance. The study aims to identify these factors and explore their direct impact on educational attitudes (Obi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the influence of socio-cultural factors on student attitudes.
  2. To assess how cultural practices affect academic motivation.
  3. To recommend strategies to align cultural values with educational goals.

Research questions:

  1. How do socio-cultural factors shape students’ attitudes towards education?
  2. What cultural practices promote or hinder academic motivation?
  3. What measures can improve the integration of socio-cultural values in education?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Positive socio-cultural influences enhance student attitudes towards education.
  2. H₂: Conflicting cultural practices contribute to academic disengagement.
  3. H₃: Tailored interventions can reconcile cultural values with educational objectives.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of socio-cultural factors on student attitudes, offering insights for policymakers and educators to design culturally responsive teaching methods that enhance academic motivation and performance in Ede South (Ayodele, 2023; Obi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The research is limited to assessing the impact of socio-cultural factors on students’ attitudes towards education in Ede South Local Government Area, Osun State, and does not consider other extraneous influences.

Definitions of terms:

  • Socio-cultural Factors: Social and cultural influences that shape individual attitudes and behaviors.
  • Educational Attitude: The perception and mindset of students regarding education.
  • Cultural Practices: Traditions and customs that influence behavior and decision-making.
